Approximately 120km north of Adelaide, nestled in the Skilly hills, just 2 km’s from the township of Watervale in the middle of the beautiful Clare Valley, Hughes Park offers 2 cottages. The first one Hughes Park Cottage opened in 2009, an Award Winning private two-bedroom cottage. The second Sir Walter’s Cottage opened in early 2020 also a 2 bedroom but 2-bathroom cottage.
Both originating from 1845 and are surrounded by beautiful vines and historic sheep farming country – perfect for a stroll and a photographer’s delight. The cottages are family friendly and children are welcome. Snuggle up in front of the open fireplace in winter, you will feel miles away from the stress and hustle of life in your Clare Valley sanctuary yet a stones throw from many wineries. Kookaburras chuckling at dusk as the sun sets over the Hills. The views often referred to a scene out of a Hans Heysen’s painting.
Staying here you may even see Andrew rounding up a mob of sheep with working dogs out the window. Wildlife and Birdlife is spectacular, sheep grazing, roo’s, deer, kookaburra’s and much more.
Only 3km’s to the famous Riesling Trail too. Walks can be taken to the top of Mt Oakden which spans views over vineyards from Clare to Auburn and in the other direction from Balaklava Plains to St Vincent’s Gulf.

The cottages verandas are very inviting with its directors chairs perfectly positioned to take in the afternoon sun. The front door opens to a welcoming lounge with comfortable sofas, perfect for relaxing on and a large open fire place. Knowing how much everyone enjoys an open fire, there is a generous basket of firewood right outside the front door. *
Guests then walk through to a large dining and kitchen area with floor to ceiling windows, which make the most of the Hans Heysen views of the magnificent gums which lie beyond. The kitchen is furnished with all the essentials – microwave, stove, oven, large fridge and plenty of bench space to cook up a storm!
Sleeping 4 people the cottages comprise of a main bedroom with a Queen Size bed (Sir Walter’s has an ensuite bathroom) and the guest bedroom has two King single beds. The bedrooms all have fresh decor and fluffy pillows with thick goose down quilts and electric blankets take care of guests on chilly nights.
In the summer, guests can make use of the Weber barbecue under the verandah and enjoy a dinner among the gum trees while listening to the laughing kookaburras overhead.

*A generous basket of wood is supplied to Hughes Park guests but after this is consumed, guests will be charged for extra wood.
**Two people occupying both bedrooms incur an extra linen fee of $25. The 2nd bedroom is locked. Please notify us if using both bedrooms for two people.
For cancellations notified more than 14 days prior to your stay, full deposit is refunded immediately. Cancellations notified 7 days or less prior to your stay will forfeit 1 nights accommodation.
